From faculty to community, this is how we roll. A Service Learning Project by the Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship, Faculty of Management UTM called “Recloth: Don’t Dump It, Recycle It” campaign was launched by 21 undergraduate students from Logistics Management (SBSF 4103) class on 15 November 2022. The sustainability awareness and knowledge transfer program aimed to educate and facilitate textile consumers in Malaysia on proper ways of textile recycling in response to the growing problem of environmental pollution caused by textile and clothing manufacturing around the world.
This community based project was supervised by FM Marketing Senior Lecturer and Research Manager, Associate Professor Dr. Thoo Ai Chin and supported by a few industry and school collaborators, namely the #KlothCares, Life Line Clothing Malaysia (LLCM), MINUS Zero Waste and Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Suria, Johor Bahru.
Collectively, the committee managed to gather unwanted textiles from the community and organize several roadshows at nearby residential areas.
On 14 January 2023, a textile recycling drive-thru event was also successfully rolled out at the Faculty of Management UTM parking lot.
A total of 1.5 tonnes of textiles were collected and donated to Life Line Clothing Malaysia (LLCM) throughout the campaign and drive-thru event, exceeding the initial goal of 1 tonne. Kudos and well done to the entire Service Learning team!
According to the Program Director, Mr. Subash Sandran (Final Year Marketing), students were exposed to sustainable thinking and reflection of reverse logistics concepts learned in class and subsequently able to disseminate the information on what, why, where, and how to recycle textiles in Malaysia via the project’s Instagram “Recloth With Us”.
