
Dr Adnan Ali’s journey from South Waziristan District in Pakistan, affected by the 9/11 aftermath, to becoming a celebrated postgraduate award recipient at UTM is a story of one’s resilience in the face of adversity. His journey, characterised by displacement and hardship has lead to remarkable success and significant academic contribution. Growing up near the Afghanistan border, Dr. Adnan experienced
the direct impact of the war on terror, leading to a decade of being an Internally Displaced Person (IDP). The return to his homeland brought the grim reality of a destroyed home and community. Yet, these challenges only strengthened his determination to pursue higher education. Despite the ambition to complete his education in Pakistan, Dr. Adnan faced numerous obstacles.
However, the support from his cousin, Habib Ullah Burki, enabled him to consider studying abroad, leading to his decision to pursue his doctoral studies in the beautiful and prosperous Malaysia. His academic journey in Malaysia was a blend of excellence and perseverance. He overcame significant challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and research setbacks, to excel in his studies including in his Malay language and culture class.
Dr. Adnan’s PhD was supervised by Associate Professor Dr. Suresh Ramakrishnan from the Faculty of Management’s Department of Accounting and Finance. His research, focusing on the impact of natural resources on financial systems in ASEAN-3 economies, led to the publication of several high impact journal articles. His scholarly work earned him significant accolades in various national and international research platforms.
Dr. Adnan’s leadership skills shone brightly during his time at UTM. He served as the President of ISS-Pakistan UTM 2021/22, and as Vice-President of PGSS AHIBS-FM, and ISS-Pakistan 2020/21. In these roles, he spearheaded various activities, serving as a Director and Vice Director, showcasing his organisational and leadership prowess.
Demonstrating his commitment to academic discourse, Dr. Adnan organised two significant conferences and played an active role in the Graduate Research Exhibition (GrEx 2021) organised by UTM, contributing to the academic community’s enrichment.
