The Faculty of Management, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has taken a significant step forward in university-industry collaboration with the signing of a Letter of Collaboration (LOC) with Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL). This strategic initiative represents a critical milestone in advancing the national education agenda, while simultaneously strengthening the brand visibility and institutional reputation of both UTM and MRL.
MRL Sdn Bhd, the project owner of the East Coast Rail Link – ECRL, plays a vital role in developing Malaysiaโ€™s rail infrastructure to enhance connectivity and catalyse regional economic growth.
The LOC lays the foundation for broader engagement including a future Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and concrete project implementation. This collaboration focuses on Work-Based Learning (WBL), student internships, staff attachments, curriculum development, research and consultancies, knowledge sharing through lectures and seminars, social impact assessments, and joint publication efforts.

Their leadership in shaping national infrastructure and strategic development reflects the profound contribution of UTM graduates to Malaysiaโ€™s progress. In recognition of his exceptional leadership and experience, Datoโ€™ Sri Darwis has also been appointed as an Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Management. His insights and professional journey are expected to enrich the academic environment and inspire the next generation of UTM students.
MRLโ€™s recent accolades such as the ESG Impact Award (Silver โ€“ Supply Chain Management), Gold (Innovative Partnership), Gold (Sustainable Product and Services), and Best Islamic Finance Deal in Southeast Asia (Sukuk 2024) signifies its strong performance in sustainability and strategic innovation.
Meanwhile, UTM continues its upward trajectory in global rankings, rising from #181 in 2024 to #153 in 2025. This collaboration is anticipated to further enhance UTMโ€™s international standing through knowledge co-creation and high-impact industry engagement.
