35 students from the Bachelor of Management (Technology) and Bachelor of Management (Marketing) embarked on a transformative journey through service learning as part of the Global Circular Economy Innovation Challenge (GCEIC) 2024. Highest gratitude to the Faculty of Management, UTM International and UTM School of Undergraduate Studies for the funding and support.
Surabaya, Indonesia, served as an inspiring setting for this significant chapter in the studentsโ€™ educational journey, where academic concepts were applied in real-world contexts, sparking the vision for a more sustainable future.
Under the visionary guidance of Dr. Logaiswari Indiran, Dr. Umar Haiyat Abdul Kohar, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Norhayati Zakuan, the programme aimed to foster a thorough understanding of sustainable and circular practices in the community and industry, encouraging the development of environmentally sustainable solutions.
The journey began with the Circular Economy Challenge at the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Surabaya, Indonesia, encompassing 4 distinct challenges focused on Circular Economy:
โ‡๏ธ Creating a social marketing strategy using posters, TikTok, and YouTube videos
โ‡๏ธ Designing a Prototype-on-Paper for an innovative Circular Economy concept
โ‡๏ธ Formulating a Social Business Model Canvas (SBMC)
โ‡๏ธ Conducting a business pitch for the entire project
Participants then connected theory with practice through visits to three local kampungs, gaining firsthand experience of circular practices. The journey also included a visit to the stunning Mount Bromo, adding a touch of natural beauty to the experience.
An impactful part of the programme was the delivery of Circular Economy awareness talks to 10 local schools in Surabaya. This initiative sought to inspire and educate the younger generation on reducing waste, reusing resources, and contributing to a sustainable future.
The GCEIC 2024 provided an all-encompassing experience, merging various activities such as campaign creation, field trips, and talks to enhance studentsโ€™ understanding of environmental principles. This broadened their outlook and encouraged thoughtful approaches to sustainability. The programme significantly influenced both students and lecturers, nurturing a commitment to environmental stewardship and motivating continued progress in sustainable practices.
Stay tuned to more exciting activities like international community projects, global outbound programmes, knowledge exchange, and service learning initiatives from the Faculty of Management UTM as we advance towards a circular and sustainable future!
